Does anyone have the dimensions or length, or any idea how to duplicate the emergency steering gear on the Endeavour 42? The rusted metal pipes I once had were knocked overboard (accident) by a guest.

Anne,
To be quite frank with you the emergency steering tiller that comes with the boat is entirely innadequate. The problem is that the arm or tiller is too short. Also, anyone who has had to use it will tell you that it's almost impossible to use because of the lack of leverage. You might also find that the "tiller" portion doesn't have enough clearance to be funtional. It would be worth your effort to sit in the cockpit and design your own. Of course you should make sure the ships steering is in good condition in the first place. Make sure the cable has the proper tension on it as it can jump off the quadrant if loose.
What Endeavour supplied was simply two pieces of tube welded together at right angles. The post end was designed to fit on the top of the steering quadrant. _________________ Paul Uhl

| I made an emergency tiller that works. I bought a socket to fit the head of the rudder stock, along with an 18" extention. One of the rods on the origional emergency tiller fits into the top of the extension,it gives me a tiller about 2' long that can be plugged in at any angle to clear the wheel. Mine works best when it is run across the cockpit. I sit behind it, it runs across my knees. A long breaker bar would also work as the tiller. |
