I have a 1985 E-42. 2 water tanks. The valve to switch between tanks as well as the water pump and distribution manifold are all in the engine room. Are all E-42's set up like this?
When I run the engine for any length of time, the water system seems to lock up. The heat seems to build up a lot of pressure in the system and it will not pump any water, hot or cold. The hot water tank is in the engine room and has a check valve on the cold intake side. After the engine cools down, I run a faucet to releive pressure and then start the pump up and it works fine.

Does the pump come on and stall out? If so the only way you could get the extra pressure is from the heat exchanger in the hot water heater. It sounds like the engine is running way to hot and creating steam in side the hot water tank.
The next possibilty is the heat from the engine room is allowing the tubing to expand at a small crack and allowing the pump to suck air.
Our system is set the same way, the point that bothers me is you having to relieve pressure. Do you have the relief valve on the heater plugged or capped.
The key to the problem would be one of two things.
1. Is the pump loosing prime.
2. Is the pump stalling out.
Note. a centrifigual pump will free spin when it is dead headed.
a diaphram pump will stall out.

Not sure how to answer your questions...don't know "stall out".
Yes, I do think it is loosing it's prime. But when I take the inlet hose off to see if there is suction, there is none or almost none. There are no leaks downstream of the pump.
I'm having the problem now with the engine cool...no engine run time for a week. The whole thing is intermittent. I put a better, new check valve on the cold input to the hot water to stop hot water backflow to the system. |

stallout is when the pump can not pump any more and the motor stops running.
The pump does not have a lot of suction when you are running it dry.
After reveiwing your previous comments I think the trouble is on the suction side of the water pump.
Can you run a hose to a bucket from the suction side of pump, run pump until both hot and cold are not spitting air and shuts off on the pressure switch. Let system set and see if the pump drains back on the suction. The problem could very well be the water pump it's self.
A bit of trash stuck under the seat, small hole in the diaphram.
You could put the extra check valve in the suction to the pump and start and see if that helps the problem. Valves at each tank would be better.
We had pump problem and had the same simtions. A leak on the suction side is very hard to find due the fact you can't pressure check.
