For some reason we receive "Yachting" Magazine which focuses on mega yachts, the type of which dreams are made of—at least for me. I normally don't do much with the magazine other than look at the pictures but in the August 2008 issue a small article on charts for MAC users jumped out at me.
It basically said that over the past couple of years, charting for MAC users has improved with the release of MacEnc, MacGPS, and GPSy. However there is a new kid on the block: EarthNC which works on both MACs and PCs. It essentially juxtaposes the NOAA vector charts with Google satellite imagery giving you the birds eye view. While it's based on a broadband connection there is a caching option that allows you to cache the maps and use the system without the connection. EarthNC is free on the internet. The 757 NOAA charts optimized for the Google interface run $50 but reportedly doesn't interface with other instrument systems well. Sounds like it would be great as a stand alone or for trip planning at home.
Check it out at www.earthnc.com
