After 6 years I thought I have seen it all.  The water tanks will hold water and the system will keep pressure.   BUT  after only a few min it starts to pump air. 3 way value 1-2 or All, same thing.   When I top off the tank ( fill the on deck line until it over flows) the pressure will hold but just until I pump off 3 gal or so.  On a 1985 40 is the water taken from the top of the tank with a pipe to the bottom?   Best I can think of.  HELP before I pull up the sole.

This sounds like either:
a) someone switched the suction line with the tank vent hose, or
b) you have a suction fitting on the tank top and the internal tube (that would go from the top fitting to the bottom of the tank), came loose.
If you are drawing down the water that is in the vertical fill hose before the air suction begins, answer (b) seems most likely.
I put in new water tanks a few years ago, and the suction fitting is now located at the tank bottom.
Please let us know what the problem is/was when you find it.
best regards,
Fred
