transmission coupler problem

I have an Endeavour 37 sailboat with a Perkins 4108 & a velvet drive transmission. I am having problem with the coupler due to an enlarged keyway in the shaft i think, giving a little play but sufficient to snap the retaining bolt that goes tru the coupler. This bolt is supposed to retain the shaft in position when in reverse, but because of the play, this 3/8th-41/2 " hardened steel bolt keeps on breaking. I have added a brand new Variprop 4 blade feathering prop. Could it be the cause? Would a key-less coupler be a solution & strong enough? Any advice would be welcome on this matter. Thanks Chris

Hi Chris,

I also have a 1979 E37 plan A, based in Lake Champlain. During the winter it is kept à St-Paul-de-l'ile aux-noix on the Richelieu River in Quebec.

I have had a similar problem with my shaft. The set screw holding the shaft to the coupling was not wired and came loose, the shaft droped out of the coupling and I was left with no control at all. I had to to disassemble the coupling to the transmission and reset the shaft and setscrew in place.

I don't quite understand the screw you are talking about.

Please explain further.

I had the same problem with my e42 (perkins 4-108 & hearth transmission). The coupler keyway had a lot of play, and the set screw wasn't doing it's job. Our solution was a clamshell type coupler (keyless). I've put on 700 miles so far with the new coupler, and everything is behaving as it should.
