Engine was pulled a few weeks ago and I am finally getting around to cleaning up the engine room prior to the new (rebuilt) perkins. Since I will be rewiring the entire boat and I hate the idea of wires inside the engine space, I figured I would start pulling wires....
Found a rats nest of problems.
Wire spliced to battery cable. Wire going nowhere. Quite a bit of it in fact.
All coated with oil...
Can't believe endeavour thought putting a electrical panel inside the engine space was a good idea. Like putting fuel tanks in the bilge... just dumb.
I was going to put the new panels above the freezer in the walk thu space to the aft cabin, but now planning on putting at least the A/C panel in the Shelf on the starboard side aft master stateroom, above the hanging locker and drawers. The batteries were relocated to below the bunk on the starboard side, and the cables will route thru the seat, behind the locker and up to the panel. The new 50 amp shore power will be thru the locker on the starboard side, and into the new a/c panel. Total wire will be less than 2 feet with drip loop. The d/c run from the battery buss will be less than 8 feet with 2/0 cable. Will post pics when its done.
Some of the breakers will be in the form of subpanels. The cockpit will have a waterproof panel by blue sea systems that will handle all nav lighting, instrument lighting, autopilot wash down pump and spreader lights.
The bilge pumps along with the new grey water pump will be located near the nav station, off a seperate buss, using contura switches and fusing.
Right now I plan on 3 pumps, a jabsco diaphragm pump to keep the bilge empty, and 2 rule 3000's. One high up, one low down.
Hopefully all non essential wires will be out of the engine space, and things will be much simpler. That is the goal.

Wow that's going to be sweet. I like your ideas. I'm doing a simlar job myself. The engine ws out now I'm rewiring just the engine but have added some creature comforts..... Wash down pump, hard wired oils change pump, sump pump..... I got a new 6 breaker panel from blue sea for all my new toys. Blue sea makes some sexy products IMO. Not so sexy prices. I have to agree,,,, why did the put the panels in the engine compartment? U must have the cc model. I'm jealous.

Tell me about your oil change plan please. What are you using ? Are you using a dedicated sump or just older oil bottles?
Was going to use the reverso oil pump but haven't thought it thru allthe way yet. Future project.

What breaker panel from bss did you use, the older type or the new 360 panel?

i didnt get the 360. i actually prefer the older style. matches the endeavour type. about the oil change pump.. i bought the groco vane pump made or oil chages. i happen to work at westmarine so i get an awsome discount. when i had the oil pan off, (had to replace the rear main seal) perkins 4-108. when the pan was off i made a tube out of pipe and directed the tube beneath the crank along the inside of the oil pan and it stops in the very back of the pan.

Not yet haven't had the time.
Took some photos today with my iphone after I took apart the built in freezer in the walk thru starboard side.
The insulation was 2" on top. There was no insulation or gasketing around the hatch cover, only formica. The insulation on one side was 2", the other 3" and the face 5" and in the back, next to the hull, a extremly poor attemt to insulate. There were large gaps. So If you thought by poking into the from that you had 5" all around, you would be mistaken.

I also spent the last few days pulling out all the wiring in the engine space, as well as the insulation. The insulation is a fiberglass material I guess. I hope so and not asbestos. It is covered with a fiberboard that has a thin layer of paint or coating on it. Not what I would want in a high temp oil environment.
I want to replace it with the glacier bay stuff, but its to pricey, so I am going with soundown. Its that same material, just built different. It has a mylar surface and 1 1/2" of foam. It should do the job well.

My perkins had a oil change feature via the bottom of the oil pan, but not sure if it will still be there when it gets back. I was going with the reverso oil change pump. Future project.

Is your engine out? If so you should put in an oil change site. Is she in a boat yard or Ina slip?
