OK: so after I purchased the Yanmar 3 cyl replacement engine, the mechanic determined the the prop shaft enters the boat at an 18 degree angle. The Yanmar specs call for a maximum of 8-10 degrees. So, he said I need a "down angle transmission". This set-up starts with an 8 degree down angle so if the engine is mounted at a 10 degree angle, we get the 18 degrees without violating manufacturer's specs.
Only two 3 cyl diesel engines have a "down angle": Volvo and Beta/Nanni (Kubota). My mechanic who will install and support the new engine strongly suggested the Volvo (he's a Yanmar dealer), so that's where I'm heading. I'm heartbroken in that Yanmar seems to be the engine of choice, but I've been shut-out.
Another E32 in my club just repowered with the Yanmar and he's got some issues with "rumbling" at idle. His mechanic says he'll do something with the stuffing box and cutlass bearing when the boat is next hauled for bottom paint.
I'm posting this for sharing purposes and comments.
The experience of losing my engine 20 miles out of West End Grand Bahama island after motoring 14 hours through a nasty tropical wave in the Gulfstream (25 knots from the Northeast, 6'+seas, squalls, etc.) and cancelling my 3 week trip to the Abacos has been depressing. The main halyard wrapped aroung the tv attenna mounted on the mast (I never watch TV) and we drifted North under jib in the shipping lanes until I took the CG suggestion and called for a tow.
The upside was a new engine for the E32 which I LOVE to sail. But, I really wanted the Yanmar. They seem to be the engine of choice for new boat manufacturers as well as repowers.
I hope the Volvo and I will become friends.
