Some of you may know my E40 sunk at the slip beginning of may. Electrolysis of the stbd head thru hull. Boat bottomed out in 6.5 feet of water and bow down, but the perkins was under water. The alternator, starter are hosed, and salt water is in the engine.
I don't have the  cash for a replacement engine, so a rebuild is in the future.
I could  try to just flush it out, after new starter and alternator, but of course my local engine guy does not recommend that, and I would like the peace of mind that rebuild would bring. Also it will allow me to spruce up the engine space, all new insulation, replace the fuel tank ( that I just repaired but has water sitting in it for 3 months now.... why that  long is a hard story... just know that marina's contractor  yards only suck).
So I need a good place to send it to. My local wants to send it to Houston, and that may be fine, but he won't give me a estimate and that just makes me not want to use him.
Anyone do a rebuild on the engine and if so where did you send it out to?
What in addition to the engine should I consider replacing?
Thanks. Bob

Contact Waterway Marine, Annapolis, Md. Klaus Hain is the owner/manager - He maintains hundreds of these for the Navy, and has replaced mine with a rebuild - very competent - but not in-expensive. Peace of mind, though - he knows these engines inside and out. He took my 4-108 in trade when it died last year.... He's currently cleaning up a 4-108 from our club's work boat that sank last week.

Fresh water or salt water?
I had a rainwater internal flooding problem about 10 years ago. Our Perkins was under water for a few weeks. I drained the water, ran fresh oil through it and cranked it over by hand until I got tired. Repeat 2 or 3 more times (oil is cheap). I cleaned the electrical bits and my Perkins has been purring ever since.
Now, salt water is an entirely different kettle of fish. You'll want to tear down the engine completely. A rebuild may not be necessary, but a thorough cleaning might get you by. It depends on how much damage the salt has done to moving parts.
Wiring will have to go. Likewise anything else that salt can penetrate.
btw, I too had a thru hull deteriorate in the forward head, AND the starboard cockpit drain. Luckily we caught it before we sunk.   Whew.  :<O
Electrolisis...caused by faulty bonding. It took 5 years, but those two thru hulls were completely shot.
good luck,
Fred (E40 'Liberty')

Yeah Fred of course it was salt water...  Sad

Since I have a insurance check I figure its time to use it to rebuild the engine and make sure it will run another 10K miies.

Thanks for the contact Mitch. I may call him if my local doesn't come thru.

Whomever you choose to do the engine rebuild, should be near enough to you so that you may be there to 'observe' as things go back together.
You don't always get what you Expect, but you will get what you Inspect.
Cruiser stories abound of engines rebuilt with parts missing, mismatched,  or improperly installed.
Even the best are not perfect.
best regards,
Fred
