Has anyone modified or changed the exhaust system, due to the fact when powering the exhaust thru-hull is 12 inches below the water level; and when sailing it is 6 inches below waterlevel.
The back of the cockpit has water coming back up the scuppers which means that the most of the exhaust system is under the water line, especially on starboard tack.
This is a puzzle since it has worked for 25 years on this boat, but I am experiencing black smoke even when idling.

I have an E35 with a Yanmar 3HMF. Under power the exhaust is underwater but I have not noticed it being under while sailing. I'll look next summer.
I am sure the exhaust loop must be well above the waterline but I have thought about maybe having a flapper to stop any possibility of water coming in if we get pooped from behind.
Has anyone else made this modification?
