|
|
Wondered if anyone ever changed engine mounts for a repower.
I have the chance at a cummins 65 hp engine to replace our perkins 4-108, but the engine mounts are different. The engine fits, just the mounts are different.
I guess its just a matter of glassing in new epoxied wood, shouldn't be to hard, but then again, what is easy when it comes to boats...
Thanks,

When I replaced the Yanmar with a Westerbeke on my E33 the engine mounts had to be replaced/relocated. The engine mechanic that did the job elected to attach steel plates to both sides of the fiberglass engine housing top and secured the new engine mounts to that. The Westerbeke was a larger engine so the housing may have been too small for it to fit properly but it has worked fine since 1999!
Good Luck,

Thanks Bob.
Hadn't thought of that.
The problem is the Perkins fore and aft are spread out like at 22 or 28", while this Cummings is 18" fore to aft, while the port stbd are several inches larger.
Putting down a stainless steel plates might solve it.
Still not sure though if I am going to it. Cost will be more when I add up new panel, new exhaust, new mounting, ect. Plus increased fuel use, and the overall size. Then the transmission is twice the price, but 4x the transmission over the Hurth.
Lots to think about.
My feeling is stay with the perkins. _________________ E40 CC

Joe enjoyed talking to you. Yeah the cell phone coverage was poor for us both.
One our E40, the exhaust hose is 2", and has about the 30-35 foot run with 2 sharp 90's and several less tight bends from the engine to the transom.
The back pressure is high I would think.
Unfortuatly the cummings is not a direct drop in replacement on our boat. The port stbd mounts are to close todgeher, and the fore aft to far apart.
The bed would have to be redesigned. I am aftraid I don't have the trust in our mechanic to do this, and not sure its something I should undertake.
So I am sticking with the 4-108 rebuilded with a new hurth trans.
But have to do something about the exhaust.
