I would like to hear from any E35 owners who have replaced a cutlass bearing. I would like to know the length of it. I am in the U.S. and my boat is in Mexico and I have not yet removed the old cutlass bearing yet. I would like to order a new one to take back with me this fall. The diameter of the existing one is 1-1/4" I.D. and 1-3/4" O.D. and the ones I've found of that size diameters are all 5". Any information would be appreciated.

I have just purchased a 1984 Endeavour 35. It is dry stored and needs the cutlass bearing replaced. If you find out the size and the best technique for removal, please share it with the group. I will do the same.

I just replaced the cutlass bearing on my E32, although the strut length is 4" the bearing i took out was 3 1/2" long and thats what i replaced it with.

I had to jury rig a pulling device to remove it, I'll be happy to email you some pics on my removal rig or since you're local you are more than welcome to borrow it.

Returning to the length of the bearing, it's my openion that the length could vary plus or minus the length of the strut, possably more, I'm not sure what it would hurt to be oversized and protrude a 1/2" inch or so either side of the strut, in my case I inserted it flush with the rear of the strut simply because thats the way the existing one was placed.

Drop me a note if you want to borrow my removal rig, we're off to Pelican Bay for the weekend but should return by Monday or Tuesday.

Thanks for the quick reply. The E-35 does not have a strut thru which the shaft passes. It comes out of the back of the keel. There is a cover plate with four bolts heads protruding, and I believe if that cover plate is removed enough of the bearing still sticks out that possibly by using pipewrenches, one could twist free the cutlass bearing and pull it along the short remaining shaft and off (after removing the prop).
But I am just not sure. I don't thing a strut pulling device will help in this case, unless some of it is done from inside the boat.
By the way, the boat is actually in Northern Michigan. I won't be doing this project until next May or so.
